Friendships are considered more voluntary and lighter than family or romantic relationships. That is precisely why boundaries are often implicit. There is no fixed role structure: friends negotiate availability, support, reciprocity, and expectations themselves. Healthy friendship requires a balance between giving and receiving.
Support helps, but needs reciprocity
Social support is robustly associated with less loneliness. A large meta-analysis with more than 113,000 participants found that higher levels of support were linked to less loneliness, and that support from friends played an important role. Friendships do protect, but only when the support has quality and reciprocity.
When support becomes emotional labour
You can be a good friend without always being available for crisis conversations, repetitive analysis, or constant reassurance. When a friendship becomes structurally one-sided, support turns into emotional labour. The goal then is not to create distance, but to restore reciprocity in the relationship.
I can ask for support, but not demand someone's constant availability.
Healthy expectations
- Reciprocity: it does not have to be perfectly equal, but the long-term pattern should balance out.
- Availability: you can be there without being constantly reachable.
- Honesty: you can name when you are feeling overwhelmed, without ending the friendship.

Frequently asked questions
How do I say no to a friend without feeling guilty?
Briefly acknowledge that it doesn't work for you right now and, where appropriate, let them know you will be there another time. Guilt may come up, but that is not proof that you are a bad friend.
When does a friendship become too one-sided?
When the long-term pattern is off: you are consistently carrying the emotional load and getting very little back. In that case the boundary is not distance, but restoring reciprocity.
